This program is a statewide initiative to assist students from backgrounds currently underrepresented in the legal profession achieve academic success and aspire to a career in the law.
The Institute combines Just The Beginning Foundation’s Summer Legal Institute (SLI) and the Illinois Law and Leadership Institute (ILLI) promoting legal education and leadership and inspiring interest in the legal profession amongst high school students.
Students work with judges, lawyers and law students on legal reasoning, case analysis, writing, negotiation, and oral argument exercises and above all - HAVE FUN!

The Law & Leadership Institute will help increase academic achievements in:
- Critical thinking skills
- Reading
- Writing
- Oral advocacy
- Leadership
The Law & Leadership Institute will help increase personal achievements by:
- Developing effective study habits to be carried on and expanded throughout their academic careers (and beyond)
- Helping students to build social skills amongst peers and adults
- Nurturing leadership skills
- Promoting a sense of belonging in the legal profession and the community in general
- Promoting a strong sense of confidence in the students’ own ability to thrive in any setting
